Partner, Michael W. Schroeder, provides superior legal strategies in intellectual property and corporate transactions with a primary focus on proper protection, growth and enforcement of a company’s unique and valuable copyright, trademark and trade secret assets.  Mr. Schroeder's practice also relies on his extensive expertise in domestic and international trademark and copyright prosecution and litigation, having represented hundreds of trademark clients at all stages before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB), including in appeals, oppositions and cancellations.  Mr. Schroeder frequently counsels his clients on copyright infringement, trademark infringement, trade secret misappropriation and unfair competition issues, and represents his clients in such intellectual property enforcement and defense matters in both the federal district and state courts of California.

 

Mr. Schroeder’s practice also focuses on privacy, data security and digital marketing matters.  As a Certified Information Privacy Professional (IAPP / CIPP-US), Mr. Schroeder has extensive experience drafting and implementing privacy policies, cookie policies and terms and conditions of use for websites, services, mobile apps, and wireless internet connections for major retailers, software developers, public policy organizations and various other for-profit and charitable corporations.  Mr. Schroeder also represents clients in Uniform Domain-Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) arbitration proceedings before the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), as well as counsels clients on federal Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA) claims, regarding internet domain disputes.  In addition, he counsels clients on proper formation of social media marketing campaigns, contests and sweepstakes, and has expertise drafting and negotiating all manner of intellectual property licensing agreements and assignments, confidentiality / non-disclosure agreements (NDA’s), and corporate asset purchase agreements.

 

Mr. Schroeder graduated from Southwestern Law School, cum laude.  Southwestern granted Mr. Schroeder the distinction of Biederman Entertainment & Media Law Scholar for his aptitude, passion and proficiency for the study and practice of entertainment and media law.  During law school, Mr. Schroeder served on Law Review, worked as a research assistant to his Copyright professor, and served as legal intern to Turner Entertainment (TBS/TNT), where he gained valuable experience drafting and analyzing talent, intellectual property rights and distribution agreements, as well as reviewing projects for clearance, defamation and right of publicity issues.

 

Prior to entering law school, Mr. Schroeder graduated from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and worked for four years as a television ad sales account executive for a major advertising agency in the Los Angeles area.  Consequently, the importance of brand and media management has been a focal point throughout Mr. Schroeder’s career.
