President Trump to Start Massive ICE Deportation Raids This Weekend
President Trump has ordered U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to begin raids this Sunday. It has been reported that ICE will target at least 10 cities this weekend. ICE claims their primary targets are criminals and those with removal orders from judges who have failed to leave the country. However, ICE has also indicated that their officials will detain and deport any “collateral” immigrants, meaning any undocumented immigrant that happens to be at the same vicinity where a raid is occurring.
“It starts on Sunday,” said President Trump this morning, speaking to reporters from the South Lawn of the White House regarding the upcoming ICE deportation raids. “They’re going to take people out and they’re gonna bring them back to their countries, or they’re going to take criminals out, put them in prison, or put them in prison in the countries they came from. We’re focused on criminals as much as we can before we do anything else,” said the President. “We’re taking them out by the thousands. We’re getting them out.”
The 10 cities that are expected to be targeted are Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, and San Francisco. Los Angeles is a top priority for the proposed deportation arrests, and it is likely the county will see significantly increased efforts by federal authorities to conduct such raids. At least in Los Angeles, immigrants who are of Mexican descent are likely easier targets, as they are in the closest proximity to deport just over the border.
If you or your family members are undocumented immigrants and have had a removal order from court or criminal convictions, you are a prime target and should consult with our office immediately so that we can discuss your options for obtaining relief. Please do not wait until the raids start.
It is extremely important that you know your rights, should Immigration Customs & Enforcement (“ICE”) officials come knocking at your door.
What to Do if ICE Knocks On Your Door?:
Do NOT open the Door! <-- Never open the door for an ICE official, unless the officer has an Arrest Warrant, signed by a Judge (not an ICE officer).
Remain Silent. <-- This is extremely important! You are under NO obligation to answer any question from federal officials, even if ICE has obtained a valid Arrest Warrant. Anything you say can and will be used against you. Therefore, it is best to not say anything at all.
Call Your Attorney. <-- Have your attorney’s contact information ready for your family in the event you are detained. Demand to speak to your attorney immediately once you are detained. Your attorney will demand that you see a judge. You have an unequivocal right to see a judge, once detained, if you do not already have a deportation order.
Now is the time to take control of your immigration status before you are detained. While this simple three-step list is helpful to preserving your rights, the most effective method for defending against possible deportation is to take immediate steps to verify your immigration status. If you are undocumented, it is imperative you call our office and make your appointment today to determine if you qualify for relief. You and/or your family members have much better chances of success before deportation proceedings are initiated or you are arrested.
